Sri Lanka has made a big move to boost its tourism by offering visa free travel to tourists from 35 countries, including China, India, Russia, the UK, and Germany. This decision aims to help revive the country’s tourism industry and strengthen its economy.
Six-Month Pilot Program for Visa Free Entry
Starting October 1, 2024, tourists from these 35 countries can visit Sri Lanka for up to 30 days without a visa. This visa-free entry is part of a six-month trial period, during which the government will evaluate how it impacts tourism and the economy. The goal is to make Sri Lanka a more attractive destination, similar to popular countries like Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Countries Eligible for Visa Free Travel
The countries included in this program are among Sri Lanka’s top tourist markets. The list features India, China, Russia, the UK, Germany, Australia, Japan, and several others from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. By inviting tourists from a broad range of regions, Sri Lanka hopes to welcome more visitors throughout the year, reducing its reliance on any single market.
Reviving the Tourism Industry
Sri Lanka’s tourism sector, once a major contributor to the economy, has faced tough times recently. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a sharp drop in tourist arrivals, followed by a financial crisis in 2022 that further affected the industry. However, in 2023, tourism began to recover, with nearly 2 million tourists visiting Sri Lanka by mid-August 2024. The government expects to reach 2.3 million arrivals by the end of the year, showing a strong comeback.
A Promising Future for Sri Lanka’s Tourism
The visa-free travel initiative is a key step in Sri Lanka’s efforts to attract more international tourists and boost its economy. If the six-month pilot program is successful, Sri Lanka could become a permanent visa-free destination, drawing millions of visitors each year and driving long-term growth in the tourism sector. This move could mark the beginning of a bright future for Sri Lanka as a top travel destination in the Asia-Pacific region.
